Where do we put the time and effort?

Part 3 · The Small Business Project

When you finally look at a business properly, you don't find one problem. You find a dozen. A crashing inbox, no website, a payroll process held together with spreadsheets, a brand showing its age.

And here's the trap: you want to fix all of it. Especially when it's your mum's business and you can see every rough edge.

But I'm doing this after five, around a full-time job. Time and energy are the scarcest things I've got. So the most important decision wasn't what could be better — almost everything could. It was where do we put the effort first?

With limited time, choosing what NOT to do is as important as choosing what to do.

We went for two things: stop the daily pain (the crashing Outlook) and unlock the biggest saving (the payroll copying). Everything else — a fancier website, more automation, new tooling — got a place in the queue, not the bin.

It's tempting to spread yourself thin and make everything 10% better. Far more useful to make one or two things dramatically better, then move .

Progress after five isn't about doing more. It's about choosing well.
